Table-Top Type Lab Cone Mill

A Lab Cone Mill is a compact, bench-top version of a production-scale cone mill (also known as a conical screen mill or Comil). Its primary purpose is for:

  • Process Development: Scaling down production processes to find the optimal settings.

  • Quality Control: Testing raw materials or finished products.

  • Small-Batch Production: Creating small quantities of material for clinical trials or pilot studies.

  • Universities and Research Institutes: Used for teaching and student experiments to demonstrate the    process of wet granulation or dry granulation.

Design

  • Conical Sieve/Screen: The mill features a  vertically mounted, cone-shaped sieve with precise perforations. The cone shape creates a bed of material that is subjected to increasing shear and compression as it moves downward, resulting in efficient and controlled size reduction.

  • Impeller/Rotor: Inside the sieve, a  high-speed impeller (often with small "pegs" or "blades") rotates. The gap between the impeller and the sieve is critical for controlling the particle size.

  • Gentle, Low-Heat Size Reduction: Unlike hammer mills that use impact, cone mills primarily use low-energy shear and compression forces. This makes them ideal for heat-sensitive or fragile materials, as they generate less heat and produce less dust.

  • Easy to Disassemble and  Clean: Designed  for quick changeover between different materials. The impeller and sieve  can be removed in seconds without tools, which is crucial for preventing cross-contamination in a lab setting.

  • Small Footprint: Compact and designed to fit on a laboratory bench.

  • Variable Speed Control: Allows the operator to precisely control the impeller speed to achieve the desired particle size distribution and processing effect.

Main Features

  • Compact Size: It has a lightweight design and a small footprint, which maximizes the saving of valuable space in laboratories or small workshops.

  • Flexible Mobility: It is usually equipped with casters or a structure for easy handling, allowing it to be easily moved between different workstations for shared use.

  • Simple Operation: The control system is usually directly integrated into the machine, with button operation that is simple, intuitive, and easy to learn and use.

  • Easy to Clean: Similar to large-scale equipment, the parts that come into contact with materials (such as the hopper, blades, and screen) can be quickly disassembled, facilitating thorough cleaning and material changeover to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Undiminished Functionality: Despite its small size, its working principle (high-speed shearing, extrusion screening) and core functions are completely consistent with those of large-scale production-type rapid      granulators, and it can produce granules of the same high quality.

  • Cost-Effective: Its price is much lower than that of large-scale production equipment, making it an ideal choice for process exploration, formula research and development, small-batch trial production, or teaching  demonstrations.

How to Choose a Lab Cone Mill?

When selecting a lab cone mill, consider the following:

1. Throughput: What batch sizes do you need to process (grams to a few kilograms)?

2. Material Properties: Is your material abrasive, heat-sensitive, fibrous, or fragile?

3. Particle Size Goal: What is your target particle size? This determines the sieve mesh size you will need.

4. Ease of Cleaning: Look for a design that can be fully disassembled without tools for rapid cleaning.

5. Sieve & Impeller Availability: Ensure the supplier offers a wide range of sieve sizes and impeller types to suit your different applications.
